July 03 - Pre - Fireworks Indoor Concert Pete & Kim McWhirter will be joined by Kenny Jobe and Keith Cole. This Yancey County group will be performing traditional bluegrass and original tunes. Pete's strong vocals and Kim's Appalachian voice blend nicely for an authentic mountain sound. Come out to hear some great music inside your Burnsville Town Center before the outdoor fireworks start. July 04 - Independence Day Picnic on the Orchard Grounds The Orchard at Altapss will be holding various Holiday Picnics on the grounds from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and will be Open to the public. Admission for the meal is a dish to share, large enough for your party with some extra for the musicians who will be entertaining all day. Instead of providing a dish, guests may pay $12 per meal. The Orchard provides fresh barbecue, water, iced tea and paper goods. Admission to the shop and live entertainment are free.

July 30 - Esley: The Life and Musical Legacy of Lesley Riddle As a young man, Burnsville native Lesley Riddle frequently went to gatherings of musicians from all over the nearby Appalachians. It was at one of these impromptu sessions that he met A.P. Carter, of the Carter Family singers. After Carter heard him sing and play he invited Riddle to travel the Appalachians with him. They collected tunes they heard being played and sung on the porches of mountain cabins. The songs were the beginnings of Country Music. Join us for this world premiere new musical. Aug. 22 - Jackie Wilson Memorial Ride Hospice of Yancey County will host their first annual “Jackie Wilson Memorial Ride,” in memory of Jack Wilson Jr. The motorcycle ride will be held on Saturday, August 22 with the rain date of August 29. Sept. 11 to Sept. 12 - Carolina Mountains Literary Festival “Mountain Mosaic” is the guiding theme for the 4th annual Carolina Mountains Literary Festival Burnsville, NC, May 14, 2009 – The fifty authors gathering in Burnsville this September 11 and 12 have been selected around the 2009 theme Mountain Mosaic. "Almost all of us came from someplace else. Our ancestors left their homes and came to build a new land. Now that new land is our home," says Little Jim in Gloria Houston's children's book. The mission of the festival is to bring together authors, readers of all ages, novice writers, listeners and learners in small, intimate settings. The goal is that the Carolina Mountains Literary Festival will inspire people to read more, write more, and contribute positively to society through the literary arts.
