Writing Contest Winner

Ms. Lila Hughes’s 5th grade class from South Toe Elementary participated in a writing contest held by the Yancey County/ Burnsville Chamber of Commerce.  The Chamber asked the students for a story featuring the sock monkey and his fun adventures in Yancey County.  We would like to congratulate Olivia Grindstaff for writing the winning story.  Olivia was awarded a Burnsville Sock Monkey hand crafted by Martha Smith.  The creativity we saw was amazing.  The parents of Ms. Hughes’s class should be very proud. I would like to thank Martha Smith for her donation of the Baseball Sock Monkey.  - view her winning entry here.

The Burnsville Sock Monkey Project started a few years ago to promote local businesses and our local crafters.  The socks are manufactured at our very own local sock factory right here in Burnsville.  Burnsville Hosiery Mill is owned and operated by Neil Ellis a lifelong resident of Yancey County.  On Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 3pm you can stop by Burnsville Hosiery and pick up your very own Sock Monkey kit.  For a completed sock Monkey stop in some of our local stores in Burnsville and ask to see their Sock Monkey.  If you don’t see what you are looking for, come by the Visitor Center located here in town or call us at 828-682-7413.
