Penland School of Crafts
Penland School of Crafts has been in operation in Mitchell County for almost 100 years. People come from all over the country to take courses in glassblowing, weaving, metalworking, pottery, woodworking and many different media.
The Penland Gallery is located near the front of the 400-acre campus. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. The gallery is open Tuesday thru Saturday from early March to December. Phone number is (828) 765-6211.
Mayland Community College
Mayland Community College offers a wide variety of creative classes involving arts, crafts, musical instruments, creative writing and more at their three branch campuses in Burnsville, Spruce Pine and Newland. Burnsville Campus phone number is (828) 682-7315.
Mayland Community College’s Yancey Campus is located just west of Burnsville and is home of the Anspach Advanced Manufacturing School. Offices open Monday thru Friday, 8am to 5pm and during Continuing Education classes.
High Country Ceramic Arts
High Country Ceramic Arts is a community based studio working with established and aspiring clay artists in a personal setting. High Country offers coursework for learners, and rents studio space to professional of various levels. They have several wheels, three kilns, a large slab roller, an extruder, workspaces & shelves in a relaxed environment.
The building is located on the hill above Highway 19E bypass across the road from Prescription Pad Pharmacy. If you’re interested in working with clay, they offer studio space, classes, parties and camps, as well as customized instruction and workshops. Call (828) 294-5760.
