Selling to large markets can be difficult for small-scale, family farmers. To address these difficulties, TRACTOR combines produce from multiple farms so that farmers can collectively meet large orders. They also work with farmers to process produce in their facility so they have the infrastructure and support they need to ensure their produce meets the purchasers’ specifications. TRACTOR’s goal is to make sure food dollars stay in the local economy, increase farm income, preserve farm culture and green space, and expand people’s access to the freshest local produce. Located at 54 Ferguson Road. Call (828) 536-0126. Website & Facebook
Dig In! is a community garden located in Yancey County. Since 2010, Dig In! has grown and given away tons (literally) of vegetables each year. Volunteers do the majority of the work with help from two staff members. All crops are grown using sustainable methods. Community partners help distribute what they grow to those who have difficulty providing enough food for their family. “We believe that working together, everyone eats.” Website & Facebook
Christmas Tree Growers
Many local farms sell choose & cut trees straight off their land. They’ll bale it up and tie it to the top of your car. Local farmers offer Christmas trees, boxwoods and other greenery. The Mitchell County Christmas Tree Growers Association is a great place to find Christmas tree farms around Bakersville.
The Yancey Farmers’ Market is a gathering place for the community.
